I visited a rehabilitation hospital in the outlying location of Rajama (30 km outdoors of Colombo). It is cares for men and women who have injuries which require extended term care such as spinal cord injuries, head injuries and strokes. I was able to visit the wards, meet the OT staff, seek advice from on patients and offer some instruction in management of rehab individuals (positioning, soft tissue, edema mobilization, splinting). I met Jegan who is a 15 year old boy who happened to be under a coconut tree. Someone else above was choosing coconuts and dropping them down and accidentally hit him, resulting in paralysis from his neck down. Unable to move his arms and legs, he has a motorized wheelchair which he controls using a chin management device. It was good to see other elements of rehabilitation care in Sri Lanka.
